Abstract

Cr-WS2 nanocomposite coatings were deposited at different Cr contents (approximately 15-50 at.%) using an unbalanced magnetron sputtering system. WS2 coating exhibited (101) of hexagonal WS2 in the X-ray diffraction data. Cr-WS2 coating prepared at low Cr contents exhibited a mixture of nanocrystalline and amorphous phases whereas, coatings prepared at high Cr contents were fully amorphous. The Raman data showed the presence of WS2 and WO3 in the coatings. The field emission scanning electron microscope images revealed a porous acicular morphology for WS2 coating and dense featureless microstructure for Cr-WS2 coatings deposited at higher Cr contents. The nanoindentation measurements showed that Cr-WS2 coatings with Cr contents  33 at.% exhibited hardness of approximately 13 GPa. The friction co-efficient of Cr-WS2 coating at 23 at.% Cr was in the range 0.10-0.12 at a load of 2 N.
