Abstract

This document presents the state- of- the- art of the nanostructured hard super tough coatings. There is an increasing demand for the improvement of the toughness of the hard ceramic ultra thin coatings for many of the engineering and medical applications where high contact loads and hence significant substrate deformations are encountered. We have made an attempt to size up recently developed hard and tough materials based on nano level multilayered structure and nanocomposites. The methods that can be used to improve the toughness of the hard coatings and different methodologies that can be implemented to measure the accurate toughness values are discussed
