Abstract

The eye-lug of No.4 section airbrake of an aircraft had failed by fatigue. The fatigue crack had initiated at the inner edge of the eye-end, propagated progressively over 95% of the cross section before culminating in overload failure. The fatigue fracture at one side of the eye-end led to the failure at the other side by overload. Examination revealed that excessive deformation and edge breaking at the inner edge of the eye-end had resulted in a number of stress raisers. Fatigue crack was found to have initiated from one such stress raiser.
