Abstract

The plunger spring in question has failed by overload. There were no evidences of progressive failure like fatigue. No metallurgical abnormalities were found responsible for the failure. With the evidences and information available, it was not possible to establish the cause(s) for overload on the spring. This needs to be identified and the corrective actions incorporated to prevent recurrence of similar failures.
