Abstract
The aim of this work is to test and evaluate the performance of the SMA based smart trimming surface system developed for the elevator trim-tab of HANSA-3 aircraft. Wind tunnel tests were carried out in the 14feet'x 9feet low speed wind tunnel at IISc, Bangalore on a full scale H.T. elevator-trimtab assembly. SMA actuator was housed in the port side of the elevator for actuation. Tests were conducted at free stream speeds of 25,35 & 45 mlsec and also for a number of deflections of the elevator (30" up, 0" neutral & 25" down) and trim-tab 11" & 21" up and 15" & 31" down). The total number of test configurations was 23. Gain scheduled PI controller was developed to control the SMA actuated smart trimming surface. It was confirmed that the trim-tab could be controlled at the desired position against the aerodynamic loads acting on it for the test conditions covered in this report. To measure the hinge moment developed by the trim-tab at various test conditions, two miniaturized balances were designed and fabricated. These balances were strain gauged with full bridge configuration and used to measure the trim-tab hinge moment on the star board trim-tab. The trim-tabs on the port and starboard side were of same size and fixed symmetrically with respect to aircraft center line. Hence, the loads and moments seen by both the trim-tabs for independent and identical deflection settings are same. Analysis of test results indicates that the SMA actuated trimming surface is effective in carrying out its intended function for the range of test con, " ' )ns normally encountered in flight.
