A fractured retainer ring of wheel hub of an aircraft was analyzed. Analysis showed that there was multiple fatigue crack initiation all along the circumference of the ring at the fillet of change in the cross section. The cracks propagated to about 30 % of the cross section before culminating in final overload failure by shear. There were no metallurgical abnormalities associated with fatigue crack initiation and fatigue appears to be stress related. Due to post fracture damage in the crack initiation regions, the reason for fatigue crack initiation could not be determined unambiguously. However, analysis suggests that the most probable reason for fatigue crack initiation could be heavy landing (s) of the aircraft sometime in the past.
