Abstract

LPT rotor blades bearing Sl. Nos. EYKL-13, AZLY-07, AZLY-16, BULZ-04 and AZLY-15 suspected to have surface cracks, were sent to the laboratory for examination. Fluorescent dye penetrant test indicated presence of cracks on the concave surface of all the blades. The crack lengths were measured to be in the range 15-17 mm. The presence of cracks was further confirmed by scanning electron microscopic observation. Microscopic examination carried out on the cross section of the blades revealed that the cracks were extended from the cooling passage up to the surface. Fractographic study showed that there was multiple fatigue crack initiation on the inner surface. After initiation, these cracks propagated progressively across the thickness and joined together to form a major crack. The reason for fatigue crack initiation could not be established.
