Abstract

Fractographic study suggests that the sheet metal of the vane airfoil and the rivets failed under shear overload. There were no evidences of progressive failure such as fatigue or stress corrosion cracking. The honeycomb structure of the airfoil was found collapsed. From the evidences, it appears that the vane had suffered foreign object damage (FOD).
