A failed bearing (No.4) of aeroengine was sent to the laboratory for investigation. Fractographic study confirmed that the outer ring of the bearing has fractured by sudden overload. No metallurgical and/or mechanical abnormalities were responsible for the crack initiation. Analysis shows that the failure took place during disassembly. The most probable reason for failure appears to be either inappropriate fitment or use of inappropriate tool during dis-assembly.
