Abstract

Failed tail rotor control cables of a helicopter were analyzed. Fractographic features suggest that the cables failed under overload. There were no indications of deterioration of the cable material. There were no evidences of progressive failure either. The breaking load of the cables was determined to be in the range 1100-1340 kg was required for fracturing of the cables. Evidences suggest that the cables have broken under sudden tensile overload
