Evidences show that the deep groove ball bearing has failed as a result of sliding of the balls on the raceways. This had resulted in severe frictional heat generation with associated deformation and transfer of material between the contacting surfaces. Analysis shows that the most probable reason for the sliding of the balls was due to the damages to the rolling surfaces arising from insufficient or intermittent failure of the lubrication. The hardness and the material of construction of the bearing elements were found to conform to specification. A detailed analysis of the failure is presented in this report.
