Abstract

A set of damaged bearing shells along with a set of unused bearing shells of an aeroengine were sent to the laboratory for analysis. Study revealed that the construction and the materials used were similar in both damaged and unused bearing shells. No material defects were found responsible for the damages observed on the inner surface of the bearing shell. Analysis suggests that the damages on the bearings are due to wear/seizure. The most probable reason for wear/seizure could be insufficient lubrication and/ or overload.
