By using the data made available by artificial satellites, the coefficients of several harmonic terms in the gravitational potential of the Earth have been determined accurately by many workers. The new advances in our knowledge of the gravitational potential enable one to predict the gravity at any point on the surface of the Earth to a degree of accuracy unattainable before. The longitudinal variation of the surface gravity flows naturally from the tesseral harmonic terms in the gravitational potential. In this note, an expression has been derived for the figure of the geoid, correct to terms of the order 10x2212;9.
