Abstract
The near field flow of an elliptic jet in the presence of co-flow has been studied experimentally using a 2D PIV system. Measurements were carried out for two velocity ratios of 0.3 and 1.5 keeping the inner jet velocity constant. Mean velocity, turbulence intensity and Vorticity in the major and minor plane of the inner elliptic jet were obtained from average of 1500 instantaneous velocity fields. The results from PIV measurements showed a few features of the near field development viz; increase in the inner core length, reduction in the inner shear layer growth in the case of velocity ratio of 0.3; at velocity ratio 0.3 the inner and outer vortical structures have the same sense of rotation where as at velocity ratio 1.5 the inner structure have an opposite sense of rotation to that of outer structure. The absolute value of the velocity jump across shear layer is a dominating factor in the development of the inner jet and for the same reason the differential growth rate observed between the major and minor plane of the single jet is absent in the case of the elliptic jet in co-flow.
