Abstract

Nickel based composite coating containing oxide particles was obtained by electrodeposition and the mechanical, corrosion and wear resistance properties of the composite coatings were investigated. The main aim of this work was to identify a suitable oxide powder which is cost effective and which on incorporation into the Ni matrix will enhance the microhardness, corrosion resistance and wear resistance properties of the Ni matrix. The oxide powder used was a composite oxide of alumina yttria doped cubic zirconia (AZY, (1−x)Al2O3–8 mol% yttria stabilized xZrO2 (x = 10 wt%)) powder prepared by solution combustion process. The present study has shown that by incorporating AZY particles in the Ni matrix, the synergistic combination of superior wear resistance and corrosion resistance along with improved microhardness could be imparted to the Ni composite coating. The details are presented in this paper.
