Abstract
This report addresses the handling qualities of large transport aircraft. The handling qualities13; requirements for large transport aircraft specified in both the civil airworthiness documents13; (FAR Part 25, AC 25-7A), and the military specifications (MIL-F-8785, MIL-STD-1797A) are13; discussed. The tradition of acquiring civil certified transport aircraft for military use is dealt13; with. It is argued that such a practice is justified not only because the civil aircraft designers13; use tailored mil specs during the design and development phase, but also the civil13; airworthiness testing is moving towards the military format; a pseudo-quantitative HQ rating13; approach x2013; SAT (satisfactory), ADQ (adequate), and CON (controllable) x2013; is being used on13; the lines of mil specs (HQ Level 1, 2 and 3). A brief description of the software package,13; HQPACK, available for the HQ analysis of aircraft of all categories is given. The HQ analysis13; results obtained in the case of a typical civil transport aircraft designed to conform to FAR part13; 25 are documented. Plans for future work are discussed.
