Abstract

The objective of this work is to study the behavior of airfoil flutter characteristics through the classical methods of analysis using the state-space approach. This is accomplished by means of a simple two-dimensional subsonic flow code based on the iterative p-k method which incorporates the theodorsen's function for taking into account the unsteady effects. A symmetric airfoil of heave and pitch degrees of freedom and of unit chord length is chosen for our analysis, with appropriate support stiffness values so that it has a subsonic flutter boundary. A computer code in MATLAB is developed for determining the flutter boundary of the airfoil structure under various damping conditions. Results have been benchmarked with those from flutter models using MSC-NASTRAN.
