Boron trichloride was prepared by chlorinating pellets made from a mixture of borax, activated charcoal and starch at 850 degree C. The use of starch instead of coal tar pitch as binder during pellet making resulted in a higher yield of BCl//3. The factors governing the yield were studied in detail.
