Formulation and numerical evaluation of QUAD8**, a shear deformable curved shell element of quadrilateral shape, is presented. This element, which has eight nodes and six engineering degrees of freedom per node, is free from locking problems, has no spurious zero energy modes and provides numerical results of acceptable accuracy in a13; number of test and example problems. The standing of QUAD8** compared with alternatives should consider (1) the simplified input data, (2)the ease of use, (3) improved performance and (4) the simplicity of programming and computer implementation.
