The stress recovery at nodes from simple shear flexible plate elements is often unreliable. In this paper, the optimal locations at which shear forces are accurate are identified and used to study stresses in typical plate problems. The rapid variation of shear forces at free13; edges and corners of shear flexible plates is related to the distinction made in Kirchhoff theory between shear forces and the so-called effective shear reactions. The present study suggests that the use of the Kirchhoff shear reaction at edges in classical plate theory is ambiguous and confirms a recent finding that the three Poisson instead of the two Kirchhoff boundary conditions may be more appropriate on the edge of a thin plate, especially if the edge is unsupported.
