Abstract

The effective blockage of a flame holder, as regards its ability to stabilize a flame, has been demonstrated to be its aerodynamic blockage. A general method of determining the aerodynamic blockage of a flame holder, employing ideal flow theory, has been developed. The predicted variation of aerodynamic blockage with geometric blockage agrees well with that experimentally observed for conical flame holders. The aerodynamic blockage was found to be directly proportional to the geometric blockage, for values less than 25%. Beyond this limit of geometric blockage, flow confinement effects were found to be significant.
