Abstract
The unsteady viscous incompressible flow around a circular cylinder is studied numerically for moderate t o higher Reynolds number range by solving the two dimensional Navier-Stokes equation in stream function-vorticity formulation. The stream function eauation is solved by an AD1 technique while the vorticity transport equation is solved by third order up winding scheme. The13; Initial development in the near wake of a circular cylindc: is computed and compared with experimental results.Streamlines calculated for Reynolds numbers of 3000 and 9530 upto initial non-dimensional time of 3 show development of secondary and tertiary vortices and indicate development of slightczsymmetry. Velocity distribution on the wake centre line and the dividing streamline compare well with the experimental13; results of Bouard and Coutanceau.
