Abstract
IT is well known that at room temperature and13; atmospheric pressure ytterbium has an fcc structure'.'.13; The hcp structure associated with low and high13; temperatures has often been considered to be impurity13; stabilised'. However, Bucher et al report' the occur-13; rence of this hcp phase in very high purity ytterbium13; also. They observe that a small amount of this hcp13; phase coexists with the major fcc phase at room13; temperature. In this paper, we report the effect of13; mechanical defohation on the fcc and the hcp13; structures coexisting at room temperature, viz 25xB0;C.13; Results from x-ray diffraction, differential scanning13; calorimetry aed optical micrographs have been used.13;
