An experimental study of the effect of temperature exposure between blocks of constant K sub max loading on fatigue crack propagation is carried out on Al-Cu-Mg alloy. The study attempts to explain the effects through crack closure phenomena. The crack closure measurements are carried out through electron microscopy. The results indicate that the temperature exposure does significantly decrease the crack closure/opening stress and increase the fatigue crack propagation rate. (Author)
