Abstract

Some of the studies of the finite element modelling and analysis of static and dynamic behavior of a sandwich type composite rudder made of either CFRP or Al with honeycomb core are presented. The finite element modelling is done using the interactive graphic processor FEMGEN. The analysis is carried out using the software package ASKA. Some of the results are post processed using the graphic processor FEMVIEW. A simple and fast method of predicting the weight of the rudder is proposed. The performance of the composite rudder is compared with that of its metallic counterpart.--AA(US).
