Abstract
The use of load/crack-mouth-opening displacement (CMOD) records during fatigue cycling to estimate crack closure is evaluated by comparing load/CMOD values to benchmark crack opening data. Numerical differences between crack-opening stress values estimated by load/CMOD and the benchmark crack openings suggests that CMOD-estimated closure cannot adequately explain the stress-level effect on crack-growth rates. It is suggested that a fourth-degree polynomial fit for the load/CMOD data and suitable data analyses can lead to more effective benchmark data regarding crack-closure phenomena(C.C.S.).
