Abstract
The development of accurate and reliable plate bending13; elements based on t h e shear flexible Elindlin plate theory has resulted in attempts to accurately evaluate bending moments and shear forces in transversely loaded plates. It appears from such studies that the interpretation of the classical Kirchhoff-Love13; theory in terms of only two boundary condition satan edge and the related merging of the actual shear force and twisting moments on an edge into an effective Kirchhoff shear reaction is ambiguous in physical terms and must be revised. Here, we offer an improved interpretation that brings Kirchhoff theory in to line with Mindlin theory and leading to the conclusion that the use of three boundary conditions on an edge as offered by Poisson is13; correct from the physical paint of view, especially for13; unsupported edges, and that there is no need to define air13; Kirchhoff effective shear reaction at all.
