We attempt to detect and describe structures from instantaneous pictures of diametral slices of an axisymmetric neutral jet. This is achieved by using the 2D wavelet transform which detects the presence of structures over a range of physical scales. The detection utilizes the property of the transform as a correlator, in the light of Robinson's (1989) definition of a coherent structure as a region of the flow over which at least one flow variable exhibits significant correlation with itself or with another variable over a range of space that is larger than the smallest local scales of the flow.
