Abstract
This report describes the work carried out at DFVLR during the visit of NAL scientists. Flight loads as defined by Dorniner were used. Spar was analysed by employing a laminated beam theory which includes the variation of flange width in the cross-section. This edge and skin to the bending stiffness of the spar is to be included. Many iterations were required to match the stiffness and strength of existing metallic rudder. Stresses in each layer were determined by using the above mentioned theory and the critical layers were checked for their strengths by using Tsai-Wu failure criteria.
