Abstract
This paper discusses wind energy conversion, a study of wind resources and economics of wind energy utilisation. Put together, these aspects present an almost complete picture of wind energy. Under wind energy conversion some broad aspects are discussed related to power in the winds, various rotor concepts, loads and transmissions, yawing, regulation and storm protection. Wind resources are characterised in terms of changes in wind direction as well as spatial and temporal variations in wind speed. Wind energy estimates including land use aspects are briefly discussed. A few case studies regarding economics of power generation, of stand alone systems and of small windpumps for lifting ground water are discussed.
