Abstract
Residual stresses in a number of AICu alloy extrusions subjected to different static overloading were measured by the X-ray diffraction technique. The alloy confirming to British Aerospace Specification L-168 was prepared indigenously and stretching treatment given by the same factory. All the specimens showed compressive residual stresses. Wide variation in the magnitude of residual stress was observed, and no correlation could be established between the magnitude of RS and the percentage of permanent set given. The results obtained by X-ray measurements were compared with the values obtained by the hole drilling method (BHEL, Hyderabad). The X-ray values were much higher than those obtained by the hole drilling method. The reasons for these large differences are also discussed.
