Abstract
The effect of viscosity on the merging of two like signed, two-dimensional vortices is studied in this numerical work. We consider initial separations, which are greater than the quot;Critical separation distance (as reported in some numerical and experimental -studies) and study the effect of the Reynolds number on the possible merger time. We find that viscosity causes the vortex patches to merge (in advection time scales) where no merger otherwise occurs. The introduction of white noise further enhances the merging process and this could possibly explain the differences in the- previous numerical simulations and experiments.
