Abstract
A visual system consists of a real-time render engine, texture files, 3D-terrain-model and 3D objects. The render engine should perform the Level of Detail (LaD) management for 3D geometry data and textures. A render engine software is developed which can perform the LaD switching management for 3D geometry data. LOD is achieved for terrain applications using a hierarchical data structure called quad tree. Using this, one can progressively display13; higher resolution data around some area of interest while other areas remain in low resolution. This software is implemented on Pentium PC using C language in the Linux environment. The graphics tool used is IRIS Performer. This document describes the implementation of a first13; version of such a level of detail algorithm using generic terrain database.
