Abstract

The eftbct of penetrants, viz., moisture, aqueous alkali halide solutions and some commcin organic solvents on the aromatic polyamides Kevlar and Nomex has been analysed. The saturation moisture content in Kevlarfibres is dependintprimarily on sample charactcristics. The dynamicprocess ofmoisture uptakeis, however, controlled by the relative humidity of the rirmbient atmosphere. In case of organic solvents, the €xtent of retention by kevhr depends on the molar volume as well as the presence of specific functional groups intheformer,IncontrastwithKevlar,Nomexsheets arefound tobe impervious to mostof thepenetrants.
