Barshilia, Harish C (2013) TiN coating on IDCA stirling cryocooler pistons. Technical Report. National Aerospace Laboratories, Bangalore.
Full text not available from this repository.Abstract
TiN coatings were deposited on IDCA stirling cryocooler pistons (total number = 40) supplied by SSPL Delhi. Process parameters such as: sputtering power, gas flow rates, gas pressure, substrate temperature, substrate bias, deposition time, etc. were optimized to achieve highly adherent TiN coatings on pistons. Detailed characterization of coated samples was carried out using x-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, profilometry, nanoindentation hardness tester, nanoscratch tester, FESEM, etc. All TiN coated samples were approximately 1.5 µm thick. Issues related to adhesion and uniformity were addressed by providing suitable chemical and plasma treatments to the samples and by using planetary rotation for the samples during deposition. The optimized samples exhibited nanoindentation hardness of the order of 3000 kg/mm2, uniformity better than 5% and adhesion strength more than 300 mN as measured using a nanoscratch tester.
