Abstract

Investigation revealed that the pinion in question has failed by overload fracture. Fractographic and microstructural studies indicated that the material of the pinion had high volume fraction of porosity with poor inter-particle bonding. Hence the pinion did not have sufficient strength to withstand the test load.
