The bolt of the ATS deliverable II had failed in a brittle mode. Composition, microstructure, hardness were found to conform to the specification and no metallurgical abnormalities were found responsible for the failure. Analysis suggests that most probably, the bolt had fractured under high strain rate. The discussion with the manufacturer (Turbotech) of the ATS revealed that there do exist a few possibilities under which the bolt may experience sudden load. A design modification was proposed by Turbotech to avoid recurrence of similar failure.
