Abstract
It is well known that Kalman filter gives an optimal solution when the various uncertainties such13; as process noise or measurements noise are Gaussian. But the same filter gives a sub-optimal solution when the uncertainties are non-Gaussian. In radar system, measurement noise may show non-Gaussian distribution due to random wandering of the apparent measured position of13; a target due to interference of reflections from different elements of the target. This is referred to as the glint noise. Filtering in non-Gaussian environments has been studied by many researchers. Masreliez introduced a nonlinear score function as the corrective term in the state estimate. Other method proposed in literature is IMM based, where the filters are matched to the system with Gaussian/non-Gaussian observation noise. In this report,.a new algorithm is developed to handle the glint noise. It uses fuzzy membership function to model the glint noise. This algorithm shows. similar non-linear pattern of score13; function as mentioned by Masreliez and gives better tracking performance as compared to standard Kalman filter.
