A fractured reduction gear from an aircraft was sent to the laboratory for analysis. Examination revealed that the reduction gear failed by fatigue. Fatigue cracks were found to have initiated at the undercut roots of the blind holes on the inner surface of the gear. It appears that the fatigue cracks initiated as a result of stress concentration due to the presence of sharp edges at the root of the undercut.
