Abstract

Cracked and fractured stator blades of an aeroengine were sent to the laboratory for analysis. Fractographic examination revealed that all the blades have failed by fatigue. Fatigue cracks in all the cases have initiated at the fillet of the blade hub of the leading edge. It appears most probable that deep machining marks present on the blade hub surface have acted as stress concentration sites for initiating fatigue cracks.
