Abstract

Fractographic examination revealed that the pistons in question have failed by fatigue. Multiple fatigue crack initiation was detected at the crack origin region. Microstructural study indicates that the premature fatigue crack initiation was due to presence of defects in the material such as high amount of MnS inclusions and incipient melting. In view of the above, it is recommended to use cleaner steel and ascertain close control over the secondary processing parameters.
