Abstract

A fractured camshaft manufactured from EN207 steel was forwarded to the laboratory for analysis. Fractographic features indicated that the shaft has failed by fatigue. The exact fatigue crack origin could not be determined due to post fracture mechanical damage and oxidation. However, from the beach marks orientation, it appeared to be on the key-way surface. The most probable reason for fatigue crack initiation appears to be localized stress concentration due to nonuniform contact with the keyway surface.
