Abstract

Microstructural study revealed raft-structure in the cold zone (between 8 and 10 mm from the blade root) in all the HPTR blades investigated. The raft-structure is a measure of creep in the blades. Hence, if development of raft-structure in the cold zone of the blades is unacceptable during the service life, then it can be stated that all these blades were subjected to operation beyond the recommended conditions. However, in the absence of baseline microstructures, this study is not conclusive enough to comment on whether or not the microstructural changes observed are common under any operational conditions. None of the blades showed delamination or swelling of coating on the internal cavity. Examination showed that the blades were fabricated by directional solidification technique.
