Abstract

Two cracked gusset plates Part No. 201Z 533H 6100 253 issue ‘A’ of ARIS beam mounting belonging to a particular type of helicopter were forwarded to the laboratory for analysis. Examination revealed that both the plates have failed by fatigue in almost identical fashion. Analysis showed that bending stresses on the plates were responsible for the fatigue crack initiation. The composition and the microstructure of the material of construction were found to conform to the specification. No metallurgical abnormalities were responsible for the failure.
