Abstract

A failed delivery valve screw pertaining to hydraulic pump of an aircraft was forwarded to the laboratory for analysis. Fractographic study showed that the valve screw has failed by fatigue. There was multiple fatigue crack initiation at the thread root, which subsequently propagated progressively over about 85% of the cross section. It was discovered that the presence of excessive amount of MnS inclusions in the material was responsible for the fatigue crack initiation in the component. A detailed analysis of the failure is reported.
