Abstract

The lugs of the main rotor blade fork assembly have failed by wear followed by fatigue. The to and fro rotational motion of the bolts during lead/lag of the main rotor blades appears to have led to the failure of the lugs as well as the threads on the bolts. Analysis showed that with the present assembly design, such failures are unavoidable. It is, therefore, recommended that the present assembly design be reviewed and modifications incorporated to avoid/minimize rotational movement of the bolts during lead/lag of the rotor blades. The material and microstructure of the fork were found to conform to titanium alloy specification 3.7164.1.
