Abstract

The CFRP rotor blade in question has failed due to instantaneous overload failure of the blade root. This has resulted in failure of the remaining rotor blades by tearing at the root-airfoil junction. Solidification defects such as large cavity and cracks were responsible for the overload failure of the root. It is recommended to use forged material for the blade root. If machining is a problem, pressure die cast material can be the alternative.
