Abstract

Two first stage compressor rotor blades from an aero engine were analyzed. Analysis showed that one of the blades (A2) failed by fatigue. Fatigue crack initiated at the root-to-airfoil fillet on the convex surface of the blade. There were no metallurgical abnormalities at the fatigue crack origin and crack initiation appears to be stress related. The blade material was found conforming to the specification. A detailed analysis of the failure is presented in this report.
