Abstract

Three samples removed from the cracked aft stiffeners of the rear pressure bulkhead of the STS-fuselage were sent to the laboratory for analysis. Examination revealed that these stiffeners have failed under static overload. There were no evidences of progressive failure such as fatigue or stress corrosion cracking. The material of construction was found to conform to the design specification of Al-alloy 2014. The microstructure and hardness conformed to 2014-T6 condition.
