Abstract

Fractographic study confirmed that the ventral fin axle has failed by reverse bending fatigue. The fatigue appears to be high cycle-low stress type. Examination did not reveal any metallurgical or mechanical abnormalities at the crack initiation regions. The material of construction was found to conform to specification in terms of composition, microstructure and hardness or strength. Analysis shows that the fatigue crack initiation is stress related and one of the possible reasons could be the assembly stresses. A detailed analysis of the failure is presented in this report.
